Flurry of Activity

April snow flurries blew in today leaving some time for a quick update. I really enjoy working outside at this time of the year when the air is crisp, the ticks and flies are still sleeping, the soil is soft and easy to dig, and the sun feels warm and inviting. We’ve been rerouting fence, hanging gates, cutting up fallen trees, seeding, fertilizing, and grading. Getting the hard work done now will improve the chances of sipping a glass of tea in July while appreciating the mountain view from the porch.

Our pastures were originally planted with Kentucky 32 Tall Fescue which is certified as endophyte-free, important for grazing horses and making high quality hay. I recently learned the skill of “hopper tending” on a seed drill as we over-seeded all the pastures last week.

We also graded some wash areas and used a straw blower to ensure a good start for the seed on bare ground. Cutting down dead trees minimizes the potential for fence issues later and it leaves a great stash of wood for bonfires!
